Hello, my name is Buzzy. Born and raised in the Washington DC area, I’m a dad who loves to ride. In 2008-2010 I rode the Philadelphia, PA and Austin, TX LiveStrong Bike Challenges raising over $60,000 for the LiveStrong Foundation to help fund cancer survivor programs in memory of my mom who passed away in 1988 to cancer. The idea for BikeInsure came on a beautiful Mother’s Day ride with a small group of riders. I was the third rider in a line of five when I accidentally ran over part of a hubcap that was on the side of the road where we were riding.
Upon my return home from the hospital I received a $12,525.69 Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthcare Invoice of hospital fees.
Since I was enrolled in a High Deductible Healthcare Plan with a $5,000 annual family deductible I owed a final balance of $3,128.47.
The bike accident resulted in a huge medical bill as well as a damaged and unusable expensive Road Bike. I couldn’t imagine how an accident could cost so much money and possibly prevent me from continuing a hobby that I always enjoyed.
I wondered if there was a standalone bike insurance policy in the United States that would cover my bike and body if another accident occurred. I researched bike insurance but realized a standalone product with coverage of true value that was reasonably priced didn’t exist.
I then connected with World Class Cyclist Dave Zabriskie, the founder of an awesome cycling and motorist safety awareness organization Yield to Life.
Dave has also been involved in unexpected and unfortunate cycling accidents while riding at home in the United States. “The worst was in 2003 as I was in Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City. I was enjoying one of my favorite rides when I was hit by an SUV on the way down. The SUV made a left hand turn directly into me.”
Yield to Life is a non-profit organization devoted to creating a safer environment for cyclists and, by so doing, encouraging more people to ride for their own health, the good of the environment and the well-being of society.
“I am proud that BikeInsure and Yield to Life have teamed up to provide our members the opportunity of Bicycle Riding Accident Coverage. Now members in the United States may have the same peace of mind that Buzzy and I have when riding.” ~ Dave Zabriskie
